Community Forestry
Trees in WayneOverview
Trees were scarce on the fire-prone prairies of Nebraska when settlers first arrived in the area around 1870. In 1872 Nebraska celebrated the very first Arbor Day by planting over one million trees. Arbor Day is now observed worldwide and trees are an important part of our daily landscape. They help shade houses and streets from the hot sun and filter pollutants from the air.

Local Efforts
The Public Works Department is dedicated to the efforts to sustain a community forest within Wayne. Trees are planted annually in parks and along streets through a community re-leaf program. These trees come from the City’s nursery.
